Blood Recipe

Do you think you know the best Blood Recipe? Think again. When you're looking at creating blood, you need something that is thick and forms well, but has the same liquid consistency that you'd see with real blood. Others have already tried this recipe and suggested that it works wonders. Follow the steps and you will get it!

First, Place a pot on the Stove and add about 2-3 Cups of Cranberry Juice (Depending on Batch Size).

Then you will add 2-3 Table Spoons of Corn Starch (To Thicken). Corn Starch Alone is not enough to get the texture you are looking for. This is why you must add Molasses too. It is difficult to measure the molasses properly, so start with 2-3 Tablespoons and then add as needed. You will need the Cranberry juice to be boiling and you will need to keep the molasses off the bottom of the pot. The more you stir, the Molasses should begin to breakdown. You will then add 1/4 Cup - 1/2 Cup of White Sugar (For Sweetness and Get rid of the Bitterness of the Molasses and Corn Starch). After which, you will need to melt some Cherry Candies. Life Savers worked for this Recipe, but any hard candy that can melt down well without burning will do. This is for flavour as well as colour. After you've melted and added these candies (You will need quite a few, so you can judge accordingly), you can add some Red and Burgundy Food colouring. You will want it to be a Dark Red, but Bonus if you can get a bright undertone to it. And that is it.

For the People of KingsTown we had one shot where we used it quite excessively. We kept it in a Thermos so that it stayed almost warm. Then the actors would spit it out or do things with. This recipe makes it so thick that it will liquify, but once it comes to rest it essentially forms a solid state (It Doesn't Move).

Painting Techniques

The first thing that I can say about Painting, as I've learned with Low Budget Films that I've done, is that Painting can help you really get into the project. When I was making The People of KingsTown, I built the Prop guns and masks, with the help of my good friend and extremely huge help on set, Mengxi Liu.

The thing with the guns, is trying to make them look as metallic as possible, as well as making them look used. A technique that I love to use is what I call a "Greasing" technique. You can use a a Black Primer (Thin enough to paint with a brush, any squeeze bottles will do) or a black shoe polish (liquid). What you'll do is apply it to the surface. I usually like to apply it after the Clear Coat because it goes on smoother). What you will do is apply it over the surface and then wipe it off with a paper towel or cloth. When you do this, it will create black streaks along the surface and fill in any uneven surface. You can see what I'm attempting to explain in the pictures below.

Rusting, is something else that I like to do and I learned how to do. Using a Red and Orange mixture of paints, I applied it in various places on the surface of an object. You can also use bondo or a Spot Putty. It dries the perfect colour and if you apply a light coat, you don't need to sand it down. Once you add a clear coat, it will making the texture perfect.
